“Rockets’ Red Glare” by Daniel M. Reck
Fireworks burst in front of the Veteran’s Memorial Building on May’s Island in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, during Independence Day festivities. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the May’s Island Historic district, the building was damaged in the major flood of 2008 that caused far-reaching damage up and down the Cedar River basin. As a result, Cedar Rapids moved its government offices from the Veteran’s Memorial Building and is no longer one of the few cities in the world which, like Paris, France, have their government sited on an island.
